Carsten Nicolai – α (alpha) pulseThe application α (alpha) pulse is one part of the art projectα(alpha) pulse by the internationally renowned artistCarstenNicolai. This app is essential for the viewer’sparticipation inthe project.By directing the camera to pulsing light sources the appwillallow the user to synchronize in such a way that the screen andthesound of the mobile device will be rhythmically and acousticallyintune.Once synchronized the user has the option to choosedifferentpulsing light speeds and different acoustic signals. Theunlimitedamount of user can create a very intense andinterestingactivity.Carsten Nicolai’s new audio-visual installation, α (alpha)pulse,will take place during the second edition of our show inHong Kong.Each night from May 15 to May 17, 2014, α (alpha) pulsegenerates alight pattern that will pulsate in a synchronizedfrequency acrossthe entire façade of Hong Kong’s iconic 490 meterhigh InternationalCommerce Centre (ICC) on the Kowloon harborfront.α (alpha) pulse is an experimental construction that looks attheeffects of audiovisual stimulation on the human perception.Inaccordance with scientific research, α (alpha) pulse is basedonthe principles of neural feedback on pulsating light sources.Thework presents an experiential set-up that explores the effectsthatthe light impulses might have on the mood, relaxation,attention,and creativity of viewers.Visible from numerous locations across Hong Kong andaccessiblevia the app, α (alpha) pulse can be experienced by peopleall overthe city.
