خلال الأيام الأولى التى أعقبت انطلاق شرارةثورة 25 يناير، كان هناك افتقادا للاعلام الثورى الناطق بلسان الثورةفى مواجهة الاعلام الرسمى الذي حمل صبغة الدولة والنظام السابق حتيتخلي رأس النظام عن موقعه.

انحياز الاعلام الرسمي للنظام السابق ، دفع شباب ومثقفو ميدانالتحرير الذين جمعهم الهم الوطني وروح الثورة الي اصدار جريدة يوميةتحت عنوان "ميدان التحرير". صدر العدد الاول من الصحيفة في الأول منفبراير 2011 وقبل رحيل رأس النظام بنحو عشرة أيام ، .

وأحدث العدد ردود أفعال متباينة في مختلف الأوساط السياسيةوالاعلامية ، لانه تحدث بلسان ثوار الميدان الذين لا يعلم أحداًهويتهم أو مصير ثورتهم. حمل العدد الاول مانشيت " أرحل ..ولا تلوثسمعة الجيش" وصدر فى صفحتان وطبع منه الفى نسخة ، وتم نقله الي ميدانالتحرير داخل عربة خضروات تحسباً للجان التفتيش ومراقبة الأمن .

صدرت جريدة ميدان التحرير كصحيفة ورقية على مدى ثمانية اعدادمتحدثة بالآم وطموحات المصريين في التغيير والحرية والعدالةالاجتماعية ، واصبحت لسان حال الثورة الوليدة . وفي منتصف ابريل عام2011 اتخذ مجلس ادارة الصحيفة قراراً بالصدور الاليكترونى أولاً ،وذلك بناء على استطلاع الرأي العام الذي اجرته على عينة بلغت 10 الآفمشارك خلال جمعة التطهير . وبدأ الاعداد للصدور في شكل شبكة اخباريةتنقل للعالم مايدور داخل مصر ، وتنقل للمصريين تجارب العالم ، معتمدةعلى الخبرات المصرية الشابة .
