The concept for Special Olympics was bornintheearly 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a daycampforpeople with intellectual disabilities at her homeinRockville,Maryland. Her vision quickly gained recognitionandmomentum, andin 1968 the first International Special OlympicsGameswere held atSoldier Field, Chicago, bringing together over1,000athletes withintellectual disabilities from 26 statesandCanada.Since then, Mrs. Shriver's vision has grown into one ofthelargestand most successful sports and volunteer organizationsintheworld.
