Under the guidance of her mentorPuratchiThalaivar Dr.M.G.R., she entered Politics and became aMember inA.I.A.D.M.K., in 1982; In January 1983 she was appointedas thePropaganda Secretary of A.I.A.D.M.K; In February 1983, shewaschosen by Dr. M.G.R. to conduct her maiden election campaignforthe A.I.A.D.M.K., candidate in the bye-election to theTiruchendurAssembly Constitutency. Her election campaign was atrial blazersecuring an astounding victory for the Party candidatesagaisnstall odds; In 1984 she was elected as a Member of Parliamentto theRajya Sabha and retained the seat until she was elected totheTamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989; When Dr.M.G.R., fellilland was under medical treatment in the U.S.A., theA.I.A.D.M.K.,had to fight the General Elections to the Lok Sabhaand to theTamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in December 1984. In theabsence ofDr.M.G.R., she took his place and spear-headed thealliance of theA.I.A.D.M.K., and the Congress (I) securing amassive victory forthe alliance; After the demise of Dr. M.G.R. in1987, theA.I.A.D.M.K. Party split vertically into two. As theGeneralSecretary of the Party she contested the Tamil NaduLegislativeAssembly in January 1989 and was elected fromBodinayakkanur; Shebecame the first Woman Leader of the Oppositionin the Tamil NaduLegislative Assembly; In February 1989, the twofactions of theA.I.A.D.M.K., reunited under her singular Leadershipand she wasunanimously elected to the post of the General Secretaryof theunified A.I.A.D.M.K., In 1989 she restored the ‘TwoLeaves’election symbol to the A.I.A.D.M.K., Party. In the 1989GeneralElections to the Lok Sabha, she steered the A.I.A.D.M.K. –Congress(I) alliance to a historic victory in the State of TamilNadu andthe Pondicherry Unioin Territory; Thereafter she securedvictoriesfor the A.I.A.D.M.K., in all the subsequent by-electionsto theTamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Marungapuri, MaduraiEast andPeranamallur Assembly Constituencies; Won a magnificentVictory bycontesting in both Bargur and Kangeyam Constituenciesduring theGeneral Elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assemblyheld in1991; Moreover, she single-handedly ensured a massiveVictory forher party and the alliance by winning 225 Constituenciesout of234. Subsequently, she resigned the Kangeyam Assembly seatshe hadwon, and made her Party candidate contest in thatConstituency andmade him secure an astounding Victory; Further, shewasinstrumental for the historic 100 percent Victory of the AIADMKandits alliance in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry held simultaneouslyin1991 General Elections to 40 Lok Sabha Constituencies, in whichthealliance led by her swept to a historic Victory by winning allthe40 Lok Sabha Seats (39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Pondicherry).Shewas elected from Andipatti Assembly Constituency in February2002and May 2006; Elected from Srirangam Assembly Constituency inMay2011; Chief Minister from 24.06.1991 to 12.05.1996, from14.05.2001to 21.09.2001, from 02.03.2002 to May 2006 and from16.05.2011 tillnow
