The ‘Metaphor in the Curriculum’ app provides interactive toolstohelp to increase your knowledge of metaphor in theEnglishlanguage. There are two major components to the app:metaphorquizzes and a version of the Metaphor Map of English. Theapp canbe used alongside the Metaphor in the Curriculum website,whichcontains teaching materials for secondary schools and onlineaccessto the features of the app. The metaphor quizzes are designedtohelp users to recognise and understand the mental connectionsthatare being made when we use metaphors. They ask the user toidentifythe area of meaning that the metaphorical word has comefrom, andthe area of meaning to which that vocabulary has beentransferred(e.g. ‘a bright child’ uses the word bright, which hasbeentransferred from the area of LIGHT into the area ofINTELLIGENCE).The Metaphor Map of English shows the metaphoricallinks which havebeen identified between different areas of meaning.These links canbe accessed through three different tools: browse,search or theMetaphor Map visualisation. They can be viewed astables, metaphorcards, visual links or timelines. The metaphoricallinks can befrom the Anglo-Saxon period right up to the present dayso the mapcovers 1300 years of the English language.
